home page... four questions you need to ask yourself • do you enjoy living in tonbridge? • are there ways in which you would like to see tonbridge improved? • are you concerned that you have little control over changes in the town? • do you wish to help influence the planning, design, environment and transport issues facing the town? if you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, you may wish to join us! founded in 1963, following public indignation about the demolition of historic buildings between the chequers inn and the big bridge over the medway, the society now has nearly 500 members. since its foundation, the society has acted as a ‘watchdog’ to help to ensure that nothing like this could happen again without the voices of local people being heard. membership is open to all who wish to encourage conservation of the town's historical features, enhancement of its present character, and excellence in planning for its future. the society scrutinises and expresses views on all significant planning applications and makes formal representations concerning major planning policies and issues which affect the town as a whole. it also meets regularly with senior officers of tonbridge & malling borough council, working with them very much as a ‘critical friend’. what does the civic society provide for its members? • a channel for the expression of views. • monthly meetings on a wide variety of topics of local interest. • social events, such as the summer garden party and visits to places of interest. • a comprehensive and detailed newsletter for information and stimulus. monthly meetings and events the very well-attended monthly meetings are held on tuesdays in the angel centre between september and may at 8 pm, with coffee available from 7.30 pm. recent speakers who have given well-illustrated talks have included specialists from the national trust and english heritage, as well as experts on local history, planning and conservation issues. recent visits have included guided tours of the tonbridge school sports & media centre, the de la warr pavilion, bexhill and ashburnham place near battle and the weald & downland open-air museum. newsletters the society produces a 16-page, full colour, illustrated newsletter three times a year, which is circulated to all members as well as to borough councillors and senior officers. these newsletters keep members informed of key planning and other issues as they arise, illustrate some of the latest development proposals and contain brief articles on recent talks and visits. civic design awards for well over 25 years, the society has made civic design awards for excellence in new buildings or restorations and holds an annual awards dinner for members, when presentations are made to the owners, developers and architects. new members welcomed membership is open to all who share the society's aims of promoting high standards in planning and architecture, as well as safeguarding our heritage. although the society is successful and has a strong and enthusiastic membership, we are always very keen to attract new members. the annual individual membership subscription is £7.50 and for family membership it is £10.00. click here for membership application form
