the memory collective “the memory collective has been created to re-situate the artist at the centre of the language of art.” dr angela summerfield who we are the memory collective is a not-for-profit, exhibitions and projects-based uk organisation, founded in september 2009 by dr angela summerfield and caroline summerfield. angela is both an artist and courtauld-trained art historian, who has worked as a curator at some of the uk’s leading institutions, which include the royal academy of arts, design museum and walker art gallery (national museums and galleries on merseyside). she has a substantial publications track record for catalogue essays and articles on modern and contemporary art, and has also lectured widely at major institutions which include the national gallery, royal academy of arts, v & a museum and the yorkshire sculpture park. caroline summerfield is the legal advisor and administrator for the memory collective. caroline is both a real estate and art law lawyer, who has worked for some of the city’s top legal firms. she was, until recently, a long-standing trustee of the contemporary art society (cas). caroline is also a trained contemporary sculptor. why the memory collective? the formation of memories gives us all a sense of who we are as human beings. for an artist, this can be as immediate as turning one’s gaze from the object to the easel. other types of memory involve recalling skills, techniques and ideas gained through careful study and observation. artists also create rich storehouses of impressions and images from which to form their own individual visual vocabulary. in so doing, they offer visual expressions of the world which can relate to shared, or communal experiences. the art of memory can thus also be the art of empathy. aims and objectives visual art practices covered are painting, printmaking, photography, film, sculpture and installation. (1) to curate themed/subject-based exhibitions which promote national and international cultural discourse. (2) to collaborate with practitioners from other areas of human endeavour, such as literature, music and medical science. (3) to devise and lead educational activities, linked to our exhibitions, which (a) seek direct engagement with diverse publics and/or (b) are pro-social in character. (4) to create exhibition-linked publications, so as to stimulate debate and long-term engagement with the theme/subject of an exhibition. (5) to research and publish articles, so as to stimulate debate and encourage other empathetic visual artists. exhibitions 'the landscape of memory', march 2012, supported by the royal norwegian embassy london, noformat gallery, london ( www.noformat.co.uk ) press coverage & publications scan magazine (london), march 2012 'landscape painting and the role of memory: an artist's approach', angela summerfield, 2013 - click here 'the landscape of memory' exhibition review, james brewer, 2012 - click here www.aicauk.org www.cassone-art.com www.artrabbit.com www.artslant.com educational events 'goldsmith’s university study day', march 2012, 'curator's tour' & artists' tea, led by dr angela summerfield, march 2012, noformat gallery. future projects if you are a visual artist, or other practitioner, and would like to be involved in our future projects, please send your cv and contact details to [email protected] for further information / press releases / book an event contact: [email protected] images: inaugural exhibition ’the landscape of memory’ 2012, featuring works by hjørdis dreschel, sara lee, therese nortvedt, angela summerfield and caroline summerfield. © dr angela summerfield click any image to enlarge
