is it a tool, fashion statement, memory capture, image creator… or maybe its all of the above? there are so many of my friends who get in contact to ask me advice about photography and cameras, in how to get a certain result while using their camera or others who would like my opinion on buying cameras, lenses, lighting, gadgets etc…which has inspired me to write and create this website. the great thing about photography is that it is a ever changing subject where there isn’t really a right way or a wrong way of doing things, i have come across instances where people have supposable been photographing the wrong way and have come out with astonishing images and a new way of using the camera or by mistake putting in the wrong film and being pleasantly surprised when it comes out developed into images and i could go on and on, the thing is what is a fantastic, beautiful, powerful picture etc… listening to people over the years i totally believe in the saying “its in the eye of the beholder “. art and photography is how we as an individual see the world and our life. for some people in selecting a camera, everything matters and they are into cameras with greater flexibility, interchangeable lenses, fast shutter speed, durability/reliability and image quality etc… but for some people a camera is more of a fashion statement, and i have been in cameras shops where i have noticed people buying cameras on impulse, for their style and looks to bring on their holiday or to have in their designer bag around town, and others with plentiful of money will show of their status, by the bigger and more costly a camera, the better it fits their ego, but this way of purchasing is nothing we should looked down upon, because the more money that is thrown into the camera industry with a wider range of cameras, is healthy in advancing the competition to create better cameras. the great thing about cameras are they all have their own personality from a pinhole to a professional camera, so trying out different formats and models is a good learning experience and great fun, as all cameras have a uniqueness in handling and also in their delivery and exposure of an image. sometimes a high end camera doesn’t deliver that retro feel you may be looking for. all cameras have a different feel and handling which suits different people and there photography, i have come across photographers who have started out with one camera system which they have worked with for many many years, and then over night changing there whole camera system because another camera was more suitable or perfect. i have come across photographers whom have been loyal to nikon over many many years and have been criticising canon, whom have now changed over to canon and visa versa, showing the ever changing technology and evolution in cameras. newcomer to digital photography may be frustrated in what camera to get, since advertisement constantly bombarding you with the latest models and upgrades. in the days of analogue photography it was much easier, because you would look for a good camera body and sharp lenses which you could keep for decades, nowadays since digital-sensors are trying to mimic film and slowly getting better every year, there is a huge turnover in cameras, gadgets and technology. my suggestion to a newcomer is to get your hands on a entry level camera which is within your budget and get a feel for photography and if your interest develops further then upgrade, there is no point of spending huge amount of money on pro equipment if the camera is going to find it’s place on your shelf in the near future, and a good way of looking at photography is ‘a camera is only a tool’, but it is the photographer which creates the image. the most important piece of equipment a photographer owns isn’t in their camera bag, it is their knowledge. it is their understanding of the art of photography and their ability to capture a scene that makes the difference between an average snapshot and an epic capture. for newcomers in purchasing their first dslr, there will always be a quite a learning curve coming from taking snapshots on your phone or a fully automated compact camera. you should not expect in buying your first dslr a couple weeks before a big trip and then understand much beyond the automatic function. also, for many newcomers in having to change lenses and having to learn what all of the buttons and menu functions on a new camera, can be a bit daunting. whatever camera or equipment you use. one aspect of ‘superior’ images or photographs aside from the knowledge of photography come from photographers who know the functions of their cameras and equipment. photographer who are skilled, takes their time in reading the manuals and familiarise themselves with everything that their camera and equipment will do. after all, if you don’t know all the functions of your camera or equipment on how they work, then how can you successfully achieve it?
