the near fall wrestling re:views skip to content raw july 8th 2002 the show starts with a promo to recap the last episode, mainly covering the taker vs angle pin/tap out controversy. vince mcmahon then greets the audience via the titantron explaining that at the vengeance ppv, the main event will now be a triple threat match, involving angle, taker and rock for wwe world heavyweight undisputed championship. pyro then rolls us into the show……god damn i miss pyro. also, loads of signs in the crowd. didn’t even notice until now, how ‘quiet’ the current wwe audience are. are the wwe currently boring them into being quiet or is just etiquette now? either way booker t is now in the ring and cuts a promo on the nwo and calls them out….so it makes perfect sense that he squares off against eddie guerrero right? eddie takes the mic and for some reason blames booker, for his and benoit’s loss to the dudley boyz the previous week. the match is very short lived, lasts just over 3 minutes and wasn’t really worth watching. other than to open the show with a match, it didn’t really serve much purpose. booker picks up the win, benoit comes down to beat down on him. shortly after golddust and the dudley boyz arrive. although it was amusing to see a sign in the crowd that read “eddie has the worst mullet ever”. benoit and eddie then take on the bubba and spike in tag team action. again, a fairly short match with benoit getting the win over bubba with the crossface. afterwards the two continue to beat down on the dudleys. in a reversal from earlier, booker t and goldust then make the save. nowinski and bradshaw iii takes place this week but with the added bonus of trish status and jackie gayda (who?) making it a mixed tag team match. doing some research, it turns out that gayda was a tough enough winner. coincidentally, before the match they show a nowinski vignette of him being back at harvard – which actually makes me laugh – is he starting to grow on me? in a match that was awarded “worst worked match of the year” trish and bradshaw pick up the win. it’s mainly centred on trish and jackie fighting, so thankfully we aren’t forced to endure nowinski and bradshaw too much. it’s clear nowinski is a good prospect but is putting him in a programme with bradshaw the best idea? bradshaw is a slugger and not much a technical wrestler – so far each match i’ve seen him in, it seems nowinski hasn’t been given a far chance to show what he can do. i’m guessing however that the programme between the two isn’t ending anytime soon, and if they do intend to classify nowinski has a brawler/slugger/fighter than he’ll fit right into the hardcore division. at the beginning of the show we were lucky enough to see the stylin’, profilin’, limousine riding, jet flying, kiss-stealing, wheelin’ n’ dealin’ son of a gun himself ric flair congratulate jeff hardy on an awesome match the previous week with taker. it has to be said that in 2002, flair, at 50 years of age looked incredible. having seen him recently at 69 years old and to know of his recent illness problems, i’d completely forgot how good he looked, and this wasn’t even in his prime – i would argue that even at 50 flair looked better than some of guys half his age on the roster. talking of other people on the roster, steven richards is one of those and he and flair go one-on-one in the next match after richards decided to lay one on flair after his chat with jeff had finished. again, not a long match but long enough for flair to teach richards that he still had ‘it’. the fans still adore flair and this is evident through their cheering during the match. next up is jeff hardy vs william regal for the european championship. two things to talk about here: jeff is now featuring heavily in raw shows as a singles competitor. this is a definite sign for a push. loving it, mcmahon. loving it. this is for the european championship and it’s the penultimate match. european championship matches never go on this late. the title is lower card, but putting jeff in with the opportunity of holding it raises it’s profile and certifies jeff as competitor. as hated and under appreciated as ever william regal bosses that crowd like no other. i really can’t think of any other superstar, as a heel, who truly plays the crowd as well as he does. regal is completely underrated and going up against jeff, probably the biggest growing babyface on raw at that point – it’s no surprise that jeff picks up the win and is the new wwe european champion. not the biggest of titles given his had previously held the wwe intercontinental but given how much they are showcasing hardy right now, i think this will lead onto bigger and better things. rather cruelly the show ended how it started with booker t, goldust, the dudley boyz vs benoit, eddie and the nwo. final thoughts: i really cannot comprehend the thinking behind this. i understand they are trying to sell a story but by having the same superstars compete 3 times in the same night is beyond ridiculous. it makes it seem as though raw has an incredibly small roster and they are having to recycle the same matches. aside from the european title match and flair’s win over steven richards, this was an otherwise pointless episode of raw. disappointing. in 2002 , raw smackdown july 4th 2002 smackdown begins with lilian garcia singing the national anthem for independence day smackdown! however it’s not long before lilian is interupted by lance storm, christian and test denouncing america and it’s citizens. obviously this brings in a lot of cheap heat from the crowd which continues right into the first match – rikishi vs lance storm. a largely forgettable this one to be honest, predictably test and christian play their part in helping storm defeating rikishi in a 2 minute battle. nothing like a bit of nationalism and cheap heat to bring in the independence day celebrations, right? batista and d-von are once again paired together to face val venis and randy orton. and once again, batista and orton were the stars of a short show. currently it seems that batista is coming out on top of orton again and again showcasing batista as the more dominant of the two, but at the same time, not necessarily demeaning orton as he is impressing in each match so far. however batista and d-von pick up the win once again. randy will have to keep searching for his w over batista it seems. straight into tag team action again on smackdown with billy and chuck defending their wwe world tag team titles against the newly formed team of edge and hulk hogan. in my last post i mentioned how i believe tag team action is an ideal way for bringing back injured superstars back into the fold slowly, (a la benoit) i believe this is the same case for edge. but i also believe that this is a smart way of keeping hogan around and keeping him productive. simply put, no matter his age, hogan sells and sells well. keeping him in the public eye and with a fan favourite such as edge can only mean good business. and even better business as he and edge pick-up the win over billy and chuck making this title change the first of the ruthless aggression era. i’m keen to see where this one goes. i can’t imagine the duo being a together for a long period of time but i’m enjoying the ride all the same. earlier in the show we saw a backstage segment between mr mcmahon, jericho and john cena. the segment itself was probably the most enjoyable part of the show. jericho, always a convincing heel, plays the role incredibly well that results in a hard slap from john cena prompting a match between the two that starts quite fast-paced and in cena’s favour. a similar pattern from his match with angle the week prior. unfortunately for john cena, the wait for his first win is on-going as jericho picks up a sneaky undeserved win. as always jericho impressed in and out of the ring and john wasn’t too far behind playing the rookie. our main event involves taker facing off against kurt angle fo
