home auto fill water boilers electric tea urns portable insulated urns terms & conditions if you’re in the market for a fast, convenient way to boil a large quantity of water then you’ve found the right website. here at teaurn.co.uk we can tell you everything you need to know about these fantastic machines (and a whole lot more!). having worked it the hospitality industry for some time we feel we have gained plenty of hands on experience and that puts us in a great place to review, criticize, promote and generally analyse all the top models currently on the market. let’s start with the absolute basics – what is a tea urn? in most civilizations you can look can back and find examples of large pots being used to heat water either for cooking or for preparation of drinks, modern britain is no exception. in situations where lots of boiling water is required the constant boiling of a kettle is inefficient and time consuming. an urn reduces this repetitive task by initially boiling a large reservoir of water and then maintaining the temperature as close to boiling point, 100oc as possible. some urns are connected to a water inlet and others require topping up -we’ll get into that distinction shortly. put simply, a tea urn is a giant kettle which allows on demand boiling water. at this point we need to break these hot water boilers into some distinct categories and clearly your individual needs will specify which urn suits your requirements. there are • auto fill urns • electric urns • portable thermally insulated urns all of these will effectively boil large volumes of water for you and keep it at a high temperature for as long as possible but clearly the different variants operate at differing levels of ability. let’s consider the pros and cons of each… auto fill water boilers these are the king of the industrial tea urn jungle. they are normally wall mounted, although counter top options are available and are connected to the mains water system. this allows a near constant flow of boiling water to be on tap at all times without the need to constantly refill. in spaces where lots of people require hot drinks or large volumes of boiling water are required for cooking these are clearly the best solution. their energy efficient approach to heating water means the initial up front expense will soon be recouped by savings from constant kettle use. read more about the burco 20l model electric urns this type of urn is perfect for situations where a large quantity of boiling water is needed for a relatively short period of time, such as breakfast service in a guest house, prior to a business meeting commencing in an office or at an outdoor catering event. they can be easily relocated and are filled manually from a nearby water source. they then rapidly boil the water and continue to heat gently to regulate the high temperature. many models feature a ‘reboil’ button allowing extra heat to be injected if they have cooled too much. read more about the swan 26l model portable thermally insulated urns bringing up the lower end of the urn market are the insulated models which do not heat the water themselves but are designed to hold boiling water as close to 100oc as they can. they are often fitted with a pump to allow the water to be drawn of with ease and are the perfect solution for mobile offices, impromptu get-togethers and small outdoor gatherings. their lower cost makes them a great entry point if you are unsure whether an industrial hot water boiler is exactly what you need. reviews swan 26l tea urn review this review relates to the 26 litre tea urn produced by the established and respected manufacturer swan. the company also make a very similar urn in differing sizes for alternative situations including 5, 8, 10, 16 and 20 litre which are the subject of separate reviews elsewhere. overall, this is an excellent urn suitable for large-scale use over many years. there are one or two minor niggles that take getting used to but on the whole it is widely recommended. let’s start with the statistics. the base of the urn is 33x33cm and it stands 64.5cm high. it will comfortable sit on any kitchen counter or could be accommodated on a small table or purpose built shelf. it weighs 4.2kg empty of water so would need to be properly supported to be safe once filled with boiling water. it is made from stainless steel which is hygienic, practical to clean and stylish enough to fit in with any setting. the handles on the side and for the lid, base of the drip tray and bottom of the base are black plastic but the overall impression is of the sleek, shiny silver effect. the drip tray is removable, it simply slides off, so if it is not required or doesn’t fit in with the desired visual effect you can just take it off. it is useful for catching the odd drip but the pouring is good enough that it is not an essential part of the urn unless it is being used by multiple, careless people. the electrical cord is black and is a sufficient length to have the urn where you want it without being too tied to wherever the plug socket is located. it has four little rubber feet concealed underneath it which prevents slipping and means it is very stable. the urn holds 26 litres of water which is the equivalent of 104 cups of tea or coffee. it is definitely sufficient for a large number of people and has been used in guest houses and cafes to mass cater with great success. this is not a plumbed urn which fills from the mains water but has to be manually filled. it will fit into a standard sized sink with a tall mixer tap so it can be filled directly from the tap but, once full, it is quite heavy and can be difficult to lift out of the sink and back onto a side board etc. you also need to wrangle the electrical cord out of the way of the water as it pours and as you carry it back and forwards. it is easier to use a jug to pour the water into the urn in situ. the lid to the urn is mainly stainless steel but has black plastic handle in the centre which can be used to remove the lid for filling but should not be used to lift the urn itself. the lid does sometimes feel a bit stiff to remove and the best technique is actually to hold the edge of the lid between your two hands and twist is slightly in an anti-clockwise direction. this is not a problem if the urn is cold but you need to be a bit careful if it is filled with hot water and you are trying to do a re-fill as the outside of the urn can warm up slightly. the tap is integrated into the bottom of the urn and opens and closes with a simple twist to either left or right. the water pours steadily in order to avoid over flowing and spillage incidents and will easily fill a mug or small tea pot in just a few seconds. the steam from the water does rise up and can be a bit hot as you turn the tap back off again but has not yet caused any issues as long as you are aware of this. the main downside of the tap (and indeed the whole urn itself) is the fact that the tap does not sit at the very bottom of the urn so that it cannot be fully emptied without tipping the urn up towards you. there is a chance that some of the water that has been boiled will be wasted and, unless it is completely tipped out you will be re-using the same water again which is not ideal. the heating element is completely concealed within the urn so there are no exposed parts within the body of the urn. this is a real bonus when it comes to cleaning as there are no fiddly bits to get limescale on them. cleaning is best achieved by filling the urn with water and either fresh lemon juice or white vinegar. bring it to the boil then switch it off and leave it to sit and cool for a good while. drain out all of the water mixture and give the inside of the urn a rinse and a wipe before boiling it again with fresh water to remove any residue or any remaining scent or taste. if you drain the majority of the water mixture through the tap before tipping out that last little bit, it makes s
