kieron appleton and lewis leftwich finished the highest of the st joseph’s athletes with kieron finishing 2nd and lewis finished 3rd; both should have a high chance of being selected for the sw championships. results of the day were as follows: year 8 boys lewis leftwich 3rd jack dobie 4th year 9 boys jack whitton 11th josh dyer 16th year 10 boys kieron appleton 2nd owen taylor 6th ed nash 10th year 10 girls mary reodique 5th area sports day on thursday 4th may st joseph’s took part in the annual area sports competition down at five rivers athletics track. this is the main athletic event of the season where students are able to compete against the best in salisbury and look to gain qualification through to the county championships in june. the weather was on our side with the day staying dry and cool throughout, making it perfect racing conditions. during the course of the day students from years 7-9 took part in a variety of track and field with our year 10 and 11 students making the trip down after school to compete. we had a high number of students make finals this year along with many of them making the podium. st joseph’s also had 2 champions with olly ashcroft winning the minor boys javelin and kieron appleton winning the inter boys hurdles. due to the high number of students making individual finals st joseph’s also finished high within the team events with both the junior and inter boys finishing 2nd. all students who finished in the top two have now been selected for the county championships with students who finished 3rd place being selected as a reserve. congratulations to all students who took part. details of our highest performers are below (* indicating students selected for the county championships). minor boys *olly ashcroft 1st javelin minor girls angel hanna 4th javelin junior boys *josh dyer 2nd 100m, 1st 200m fernando silver 4th 100m lewis leftwich 3rd 800m relay 2nd (josh, fernando, jack, lewis) *jack whitton 2nd triple jump will mcdaniel 3rd discus inter girls mary reodique 3rd discus inter boys owen taylor 3rd 800m, 3rd triple jump relay 2nd (ed, kieran, owen, james) *sosi lagilagi 2nd high jump stephen buckett 3rd high jump *kieran appleton 1st hurdles county athletics championships will be held at swindon on saturday 10th june (junior, inters), with minors competing on wednesday 28th june. letters for competitors to follow. st joseph’s teachers walk 57km for a world without dementia mr mchale and mr blake of st joseph’s went on an epic day’s adventure in aid of the alzheimer’s society. the pair walked 57 kilometres around the salisbury area in a time of 13 and a half hours. pupils, staff, friends and families raised £560 in sponsorship for the teachers’ efforts. pupils also learnt about the important work done by the alzheimer’s society during assemblies with martin plimsoll a local volunteer for the charity. another successful year for the shoe box appeal we would like to thank mrs prior for her amazing efforts in organising this year’s shoe box appeal. this is an annual appeal that hopes to give a present to children in war torn and desperate environments. the appeal asks that people provide as many happy things for the children and place them in a shoe box that will be shipped to some of the loneliest and desperate young people in the world. there are videos that can be seen on line and the look of sheer joy on the children’s faces makes it worth all the effort. we, as a school managed to raise a total of over 45 boxes and a bag of extras that just wouldn’t fit. we would like to take this opportunity to thank all those families and individuals that were able to contribute, no matter how small the contribution! a special thank you goes to mrs cullis and her form 7t who produced 10 boxes between them. wear it pink day wear it pink day is the national fundraising day for breast cancer. the school contributed with all members of staff dressing with a pink theme for the day. in addition, teachers and students were asked to bake cakes for a cake sale. there was only one entry from the students, from belen in 7t. the cake was entered into a raffle and managed to raise £12.40. the keen bakers in the staff managed to put on a fantastic spread of cakes, and those who didn’t manage to cook were in a perfect position to judge their favourite, at the cost of a small donation to charity of course! the final scores were added up and 3rd place went to mrs fenwick, second place went to miss hooper and the win was secured by miss mckenzie with her show stopping pink parcel cake with a white bow. in total the school raised £123.25 for this fantastic charity. christmas lunch at st joseph’s christmas lunch will be offered to pupils and staff on wednesday 7th and thursday 8th december 2016 the seasonal menu will offer traditional roast lunch, dessert and a soft drink of your choice. please let us know in advance if you require a vegetarian option the tickets are priced at £3.00 and are available to purchase in advance from the sch
