roxy borger ramblings on health, wellness, yoga, small biz, and living a good life skip to content home about biz schedule yoga stuff what is yoga? contact ← older posts change is in the air, always! posted on may 17, 2018 by roxtar i met magic johnson at bold 2017. go green! as you may or may not have heard, i am in the process of a personal change with my work life at mindbody, transitioning away from full-time director of business education to part-time contractor effective 5/25. i’ve had some recent health challenges that require more of my time and energy than i can lend them in the full-time director role. nothing to panic about, i’m just trying to be proactive and do what i can, while i can. also, i have a beautiful daughter who will only be little for such a short time. i want to enjoy this moment before it passes like all moments do. chet and i were babies! this was 2005 in our higuera office. those of you who have known me through the years know that i like to mix things up every few years and usually these transitions lead to good things. awesome things. growth. the best industry and friends ever. we may have been drinking alcohol in this pic after bold 2017 the bottom line is that my why , my mission as a contributing member of society, is to help people become healthier, happier versions of themselves. i put that on this dusty old website many moons ago, i put it on smiling dog’s website, and it still rings true today. funny enough, it’s not very different than mindbody’s more recently modified purpose, “helping people lead healthier, happier lives by connecting the world to wellness and beauty”. since our why’s are pretty much the same, i expect we’ll continue to find ways to work together to serve the greater cause. because, why wouldn’t we? but of course, we shall see how things unfold. that one time in mexico in 2009. so what, we like to work hard and play hard. i am so grateful that my team at mindbody is willing to work with me and allow me to continue to do what i love with mbu and our business consulting program. i am so grateful to be able to take some space to heal and recover my body so i can better serve those i love. work friends = best friends. my friend cj and i bold 2017. please keep in touch with me! i will be transitioning this website to something new but it will remain the easiest way to see what i’m up to. my cell number won’t change. if you need to find me for anything “business of wellness” related, you can also reach me here (another of my website projects): www.liberateyourbiz.com / [email protected] virtual hugs! lets grab lunch or a hike soon, k? posted in studio ownership | 2 comments contraction versus expansion posted on march 22, 2018 by roxtar how do you deal when life starts contracting on you? i’m talking about the times when you’re injured, going through a break up of some kind, or when you stop growing / engaging as much in a way that you once were. a slo sunrise one thing i like to do is redirect. if i can’t move, i can meditate. if some of my relationships have stagnated or ended, give to those that haven’t. if i’m broke, i spend my time reading (library!), working more, or doing free things outdoors. if my business is slowing down, perhaps i focus on creating something new, streamlining, marketing more, or meditating on my why and my uniquely excellent thing and doing more of it, better. i think it’s good to recognize these phases are a natural part of the cycles of life! baron baptiste says “if you aren’t growing, you’re dying.” is that true? i find my business brain believes it, but my human side wonders if there is some life wisdom getting lost. i also think it’s normal to be sad or mourn contractions or endings somewhat. just don’t wallow in it. keep your eyes on the prize. there is always something in your life that isn’t contracting. or as semisonic so wisely said in the 00’s, “every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end.” me & phe at mbu slo i have been dealing with health challenges lately that don’t allow me to do much more than lay on the couch sometimes. how much better i feel when i just accept it and use it as a chance to meditate, read, and rest. i just spent a week with many wellness business entrepreneur friends who were in various stages of contraction and expansion within their businesses. i want to hug every single one and remind them to keep their heads up and keep on keeping on! you are improving the world already! this pic is of me and one inspiring, bad ass entrepreneur, philesia, owner of romance & dance , after a week of no sleep and focusing on our why. eckhart tolle has a lot to say about this in a new earth, one of my favorite books of all time. here are some great nuggets i stumbled upon this week: “astronomers have discovered evidence to suggest that the universe came into existence fifteen billion years ago in a gigantic explosion and has been expanding ever since. not only as it been expanding, but it is also growing in complexity and becoming more differentiated. some scientists also postulate that this movement from unity to multiplicity will eventually become reversed. the universe will them stop expanding and begin to contract again and finally return to the unmanifested, the inconceivable nothingness out of which it came – and perhaps repeat the cycles of birth, expansion, contraction, and death again and again. for what purpose? “why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?” asks physicist stephen hawking, realizing at the same time that no mathematical model could ever supply the answer.” a big sur sunset “the two movements of contraction and expansion are reflected in the universe in many ways, such as in the incessant expansion and contraction of your heart, as well as the inhalation and exhalation of your breath. they are reflected in cycles of sleep and wakefulness, birth and death.” “and then, just when you thought you made it or that you belong here, the return movement begins.” boom. just like that, when you think you got this, life reminds you not to get too cocky, doesn’t it? xo – roxy posted in health and wellness , livelihood , mbu , spirituality , studio ownership | leave a comment 5 things i will do differently with my next wellness business posted on january 29, 2018 by roxtar part i: story of a reluctant entrepreneur i remember sitting at my friend lahna’s kitchen table working on math problems in 2005 thinking, “i’d much rather be working in a yoga studio right now, but yeah right, that’s not a job”. cut to 2018. i have somehow found that job. kinda. maybe my story really begins when i walked up to my mentor and friend, lisa p., and said “i just want you to know i’m going to own a yoga studio one day.” or maybe when i found myself working for a software startup trying to serve the yogis. or maybe when i put in the work to write a business plan and convince a bank to give me a loan with zero personal collateral, all while working full-time saving my nickels and dimes. or maybe when i was willing to take some personal risk to make it happen. my first yoga teacher trainees. i miss them so! what do i wish i had known? what could i have done better at the beginning? budget. pay close attention to expenses right away – retail inventory, studio supplies. spend money where it counts, with marketing, investing in your future, graphic designers, and management staff. there are always certain expenses that seem to take infinite cash. don’t overspend unnecessarily. staff. rip that bandaid off right away. don’t be afraid to end relationships. how you cultivate existing and new ones is what matters. get the right partners. rip those bigger bandaids off too. up front. have enough money set aside so that’s ok. don’t accept any partner relationship that really doesn’t make sense to your bottom line. it’s not personal! i was so overwhelmed i avoided some of these things. lease. i wish i would have negotiated the rent down o
