(click or tap on the images to expand) jeremy (20) is a junior at florida state university, majoring in computer science. go noles! yep...still saying that even after this year. over summer he again worked as an intern at harris writing test software, however he worked on a different program (one without his mother) at a completely different facility. he had another great summer, and has already accepted next summer's internship at harris on another program where he might get to write program software instead of test software, which is a bit of an upgrade. he changed college apartments over the summer, and is now living west of campus with his girlfriend jenna. jeremy is doing great at school (finding the library helped!) and expects to graduate a semester early, meaning he will have earned his degree by this time next year. another big year for bryan (17) who is a senior at viera high. he continues to be an excellent student in the business academy and is looking forward to graduation this coming may. bryan's year didn't start out so great...in february he rear-ended a pregnant lady driving a bmw. he was fortunate to have hit an incredibly gracious pregnant lady who didn't press charges so long as he fixed her car (which he did). next up was b's big hiking trip to havasupai reservation in the grand canyon. he went on the trip with aunt wendy, lyndsey, and lyndsey's friend katie. they hiked 14 miles down into the canyon, hiked through the water falls for three days, camped on the reservation, and then hiked 14 miles back up out of the canyon. generally speaking, bryan doesn't like to re-do trips, but he can't wait to go back and do this one again. bryan continues washing dishes at bob evans, but decided to quit playing soccer after 13 years. with all of his newfound free time, he took up golf and learned to surf. he has evolved into a true surfer--checking the web for surf forecasts, and leaving the house early on a school morning to catch some waves before school. not wanting to stray far from home, b will attend some university with an "f" in the name this summer, likely fsu with an eye on studying computer science and entrepreneurship. lyndsey is living in st. petersburg, fl. big news for her this year is that she bought a house that she is really excited about. cheryl still works at harris on the goes-r ground segment program, is excited to see that the system is now operational, and is getting ready for the next launch of goes-s on march 1, 2018. she has also had a successful year in her side business as a travel agent (visit her facebook page at dean travel & cruise ) and successfully escorted 18 women to nyc in september to celebrate four of the ladies milestone birthdays--including cheryl’s upcoming 50th! once again, not much new with devin this year. he continues to work for the air force, and now spends all of that time previously spent on various soccer related stuff on other things (like golf and...er...um...golf). for his birthday in august, cheryl, bryan, and devin spend a weekend at the tpc sawgrass resort outside of jacksonville. while devin and bryan played the stadium course, cheryl hit the spa and ignored her cell phone for the day. for those wondering, yes, both devin and bryan successfully hit their tee shots onto the famous island green 17th hole. even better...bryan poured in his 90 foot putt for a birdie on the 17th! devin is currently planning a trip to st andrews scotland next summer with three friends to play golf for a week. they've secured lodging at a rental flat just beyond the "road hole" green on the old course, and are very excited to play a week of links golf at the home of golf. our summer vacation this year was a short trip to rainforests and volcanoes of costa rica. we spent a couple of days hiking around the arenal volcano, down to a waterfall, and at the hanging bridges in the rainforest (where our christmas card photo was taken). after that, we were on a boat ride across lake arenal on our way to monteverde. at monteverde, we took a night time rainforest guided tour--where it rained and rained and rained harder and longer than any of us have ever experienced. jeremy, without a rainjacket, wearing glasses, and being brown-green color blind, had an absolutely miserable time. the rain scared away most of the wildlife (they at least were smart enough to stay inside) leaving us to see a lot of bugs that we see in our garage on any given florida summer evening. the next day was ziplining and an atv ride. our zoo here in melbourne has a cool zipline course that we have been on a few times, so we rolled up to the zipline course figuring we had this. then we saw the final leg waaaay over head with people going really fast and realized we were in for something completely different. a 20 minute chair lift ride up the mountain, followed by long cable runs (2500 feet long) suspended 300 feet above the ground at a mile above sea level (with the winds to go with it) made for a very exciting morning. in the afternoon we found an atv ride tour, and we drove up and down the costa rican countryside, through the mud and avoiding the cows (yep, cows). cheryl, devin, and jeremy drove to miami twice to see paul mccartney in july. we had bought tickets long before the event, and, unbeknownst to us, the concert was delayed two days. we're walking to the arena in miami on what we thought was the night of the concert, looking around, and thinking that there really doesn't seem to be a concert going on anywhere. once we figured out what had happened, we checked out of our hotel and drove back home (we essentially drove to miami for dinner). the concert, on the correct night, was great, and jeremy (the beatles fan) really liked seeing sir paul crank out all of those classic songs. later in the summer cheryl and devin met up with friends from high school in california for a long weekend. we stopped at a new micro brewery where we were helped to brew a 15 barrel double ipa beer, then onto napa for a wine tour and a nice dinner. finally onto san francisco for some hiking, an in-n-out burger (disappointing) and a nice dinner. then came hurricane irma--a hurricane for which we have never had so much time to prepare. we executed a slow-motion board-up and prep of the house that almost felt lazy. the drama, of course was where irma would go north near/through/around florida. this uncertainty basically kept us at home to ride out the storm. we lost power for about one day, and also lost a few easily repaired roof shingles which wasn't too bad; certainly much more fortunate than many others. two fairly significant hurricanes in as many years (and our increasing age) find us considering some major improvements to the house, such as upgraded shutters and a whole-house generator. in all likelihood, these improvements will simply deflect future storms, which is ok too. we hope you have a safe and happy holiday season!
