if you want a career in construction and have energy and enthusiasm, the solent civil engineering & groundworks apprenticeship will help you develop the skills to work on a variety of commercial and industrial building sites, and get paid while gaining a recognised qualification. if you’re already working on site and want to gain a formalised qualification to develop your skills for future progression, this apprenticeship could be suitable for you too. places on this apprenticeship programme are in high demand so you must be willing to demonstrate your commitment to training and perusing a career in the construction industry. how is the programme delivered? the apprenticeship lasts for 18 months, with students undertaking an intensive initial training programme for the first 20 weeks. this training will take place at our new civil engineering training centre (cetc) in lee-on-the-solent. students will then spend the remainder of the apprenticeship in full time employment with one of our partner construction companies, where they will be allocated a mentor to support their skills development. they will also receive regular visits from a cetc assessor who will review their progress and the completion of the apprenticeship framework. skills & progression as part of the apprenticeship, students will obtain the following certifications and licences, all essential for on-site employment: cscs card dumper license roller license abrasive wheels certification manual handling certification cat and genny training vehicle marshalling construction and civil engineering groundworkers are the first onto a construction site and work closely with supervisors and engineers to interpret design specifications to prepare the site ready for work to begin. they continue their work through the construction phase and also play an important part in the completion of the project. this solentcega enables you to gain the skills and experience needed to work within a variety of commercial and industrial settings, including: understanding technical drawings and plans working with architects, engineering and steel fixers surveying and planning resources design and installation of temporary works laying foundations for construction work making and using concrete types understanding various stone types and their uses understanding and fitting domestic and industrial drainage installing paths, edgings, kerbs and concrete finishes laying paving slabs and block paving safely work around existing services and surrounding environment the skills of qualified civil engineers and groundworkers are highly sought after to support construction projects and infrastructure development in areas including: roads and highways railways residential housing public sector builds (e.g. schools, hospitals) commercial and industrial builds leisure builds (e.g. community buildings, leisure centres) specialist establishments within defence, military, aviation and marine private builds gaining an apprenticeship means that you will have the opportunity to progress your career in the future too. with hard work and dedication, you can pursue roles including site supervisor, site foreman or contracts manager. with further training, you could even move towards a more technical role in engineering or commercial areas, such as surveying or project management. the application process courses start in september and february. you can register your interest by completing the application form at the top od tis page, by calling 01329 815 200 or emailing [email protected] you will then be invited to an initial interview with a careers centre advisor at fareham college where we will explain more about the programme and whether it is right for you – you must bring id to this meeting. all apprenticeship programmes require you to have a maths and english qualification at level 1 or above. at your interview, you will be asked to complete a maths and english exercise – this will allow us to judge your current level and decide if you need any additional training. once you have successfully passed this stage, we will match you to a suitable employer and you will have a further interview with them. if you are successful you will be offered a place, and we will provide further details about your start date and the kit you will need. what are the benefits?
