all hail the donut board! i mean, how fantastic is this?! also, fantastic? these ladies pictured with gracie. seriously, we would not have survived the last few years without them. to call them babysitters is just a gross oversimplification of what they’ve done for us. heroes is a much more applicable word. also heroic? mother’s day this year. saturday night mom and i went to a movie and then stayed at a local hotel. sleeping in with no disturbances by the kids? totally fantastic. for lunch, i met back up with billy and the kids and headed to the huntville indian association’s indian street food fair. mother’s day – it’s the one day of the year the kids are legally bound to not complain about whatever i choose to do. so i could say ‘let’s go eat naan and butter chicken’ and they had to say ‘sounds great mom.’ or ‘sounds great ms paula’ as this one calls me. my goodness. look at hank’s fluffy hair. here’s what he was not thinking: “hmm…butter chicken.” subsequently that is what i was thinking. welp, they did like the faygo at least – even though i’m not sure how indian faygo is. ; ) filed under: jane can parent wrong list may 22, 2018 by paula claunch · 1 comment spring break saw us sprinting off to the dominican republic for some much needed warmer weather, rest, and relaxation. yes, yes, i can hear you people that live up north laughing at me for bemoaning our cold weather here in alabama. look, thirty is cold. it’s cold and we never get snow so there is no reward for the cold. it’s all very sad down here in the winter. here’s what happens when you fly to the dr with a big family: “oh, y’all are all going to the dominican republic? are y’all going on a mission trip?” “ wow! you have a lot of people with you! you must be going on mission.” “y’all aren’t wearing matching t-shirts but i bet your headed to do relief work! true story. i got asked three times if we were headed out on mission. yeah, i’m on a mission alright. a mission to find a beach and a boat drink! alas, no altruism here! ya know what is here, though? retouching. seriously, i just brushed right over my wrinkles in this picture above because, yeah, the technology of iphoto. the dominican republic is beautiful! we went to an amazing swimming hole on the island called the hoya azul. well, some of us went. some of us weren’t invited (ahem – gracie) and some of us wanted to stay behind at the resort and go to the foam dance party. woo hoo! foam dance party! i didn’t get any great pictures but you can see the color of the water at the blue hole in the background here. just stunning really. billy took surfing lessons – something he has always wanted to do. it was on his bucket list and he nailed it. ya know what wasn’t on our bucket list? riding in an ambulance to the hospital because hank decided it would be fun to develop a tree nut allergy while we were over there. y’all, this kid… billy and i were out on the beach canoodling when hank texts us and tells us that his throat feels scratchy – like the last time it did when he ate almonds. uh…what? what last time? child, when i ask you how your day was feel free to answer ‘i ate almonds and it made my throat feel scratchy.’ like, that’s kinda something i need to know. thirty minutes later he was throwing up, swollen, and having trouble breathing. oh well, nothing two epi pens and a fun little romp to the er in punta cana can’t fix. so, we can mark ‘ride in an ambulance in the dominican republic’ off of our bucket list. although, if that was on our bucket list i’m pretty sure we were using the wrong list. filed under: uncategorized with a side of crazy may 21, 2018 by paula claunch · 1 comment a few thursday mornings ago i tossed the proverbial keys to the children to billy and headed out on a road trip with some of my mom’s family. here’s what you need to know about my mom’s family: nothing. get off the computer and go live your life. oh, your still here? well, then what you need to know about the beasley side of the family is that we’re spicy. some might say saucy – also, opinionated, loud, and independent. feisty even. we left huntsville and made a quick stop in south pittsburgh, tennessee to visit the lodge store – because we all need a little more cast iron in our lives. the next stop was in hot springs, north carolina. i’ve been obsessed with hot springs since i first started reading about the appalachian trail. the trail runs smack dab through the middle of town and the place was chock full of thru hikers. i tried to contain my hero worship of the hikers. i mean, did i take pictures with them and ask questions and gaze at them adoringly? yes. yes, i did. look! backpacks! real honest to goodness thru hiker backpacks! i wanted to try one on but figured it would have been totally gauche to ask. true story: i’m only sixty percent sure of what the word gauche means. just googled it. i’m good. met pebbles, crawdaddy and one hiker that has yet to pick up a name. straight up for real, my heart sings when i think about what these people go through. they walk – walk – from georgia to maine. or from maine to georgia. it’s just the coolest. the next day we made it to charlottesville, virginia where we had the best uva tour guide ever – who just happens to be my nephew tucker but i’m not biased at all – give us the official tour. isn’t he just the cutest? seriously, if you ever find yourself in charlottesville – take the tour. here’s what wasn’t the cutest: the art work in the bathroom at floozie’s pie shop in louisa, virginia. yea art and freedom of expression and all that but…it’s a little crazy. maybe a lot of crazy. another thing that was crazy but in a good way was the food at tavola in charlotesville. ahem, just between me and you and our entire party at the restaurant the drinks at tavola were also crazy good. on a side note i should not be allowed to drink alcohol ever again because my tolerance is so low. alas, rum tastes good when you pour super sugary fruit juice in it. and tucker may be cute but he will totally rat you out to your big brother if you have two drinks too many. it was quite the road trip. ya know what though, i like my road trips just like i like my family – with a little side of crazy. filed under: see jane travel next page » follow me! subscribe enter your e-mail here to receive jane random in your inbox! aka jane.. who???
